Scent Tracking Dogs

Coon hounds are an American style of scent tracking dogs that was developed for the unique game and working conditions found in the United States.

In the colonial period, fox hounds, which are scent tracking dogs, were imported for the popular sport of foxhunting. Various breeds of fox hounds and other scent tracking dogs were brought in from England, Ireland, and France, making up the initial breed of the scent tracking dogs that were later to be called Virginia Hounds.

Fox hounds were found to be inadequate for hunting animals that didn't "go to ground", but instead took to the tree tops to escape, such as raccoons, oppossums, bobcats and even larger prey like cougars and bears. They were often confused or unable to hold the scent when this occurred, and would mill about.

Scent tracking dogs were developed, with the purpose of treeing .( tree hounds ) They were chosen for a good sense of smell, the ability to track, chase and catch any species of animal , and most importantly, to follow an animal both on the ground and when they take to the trees. A good scent tracking dogs (coon hound) will bark and keep their prey treed until the hunters arrive. Blood hounds, which are scent tracking dogs, were added to some coon hound lines to enhance their ability to track. Some dogs have webbed feet to deal with the rivers and swamps so common in their hunting grounds.

Coon hounds, are scent tracking dogs that can hunt individually, or as a pack. Generally, hunters don't chase their game along with the scent tracking dogs, but wait and listen to the distinctive baying to determine if a raccoon or other animal has been treed. Besides raccoons, scent tracking dogs (coon hounds) are excellent at handing all manner of game if trained properly.

Besides hunting, scent tracking dogs are good family dogs that are known to be good with children. They also make good watch dogs with a deep loud, loud bark.

There are several individual breeds of scent tracking dogs that tree game. There are six different breeds of scent tracking dogs that tree, that are registered coon hounds with the registries.
